Stomp! by Luke Cresswell debuts in Australia (1992)
It's a Broadway and West End staple these days, but in 1992 the bin-bashing percussion show Stomp! was only just becoming "a thing" – and Sydney Festival is where it came into its own.
Evolving from a street corner art-skiffle outfit called Pookiesnackenburger, Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell's Stomp! had its festival debut at Edinburgh in 1991. When it appeared at the Sydney Festival the following year, many thought the group was Australian – such was its knockabout, blue-collar vibe.
While here, the cast starred in an award-winning TV ad persuading us to eat more apples. By the time they left Sydney, no-one had any doubt that Stomp! was going to be an unstoppable entertainment juggernaut.
