Rubber Duck by Florentijn Hofman (2013)

It was hard to miss. Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s colossal Rubber Duck sailed into Darling Harbour like some mysterious yellow emissary. What did it mean? Was it a joke? A reminder not to take life too seriously? Was it all the countless billions of plastic toys we’ve consigned to landfill coming back to haunt us?

According to Hofman, this mightiest of all ducks “has no political connotation. It relieves everyday tensions, as well as defining them. Its purpose is to do no more than amaze.”

And at 15m tall, Rubber Duck certainly did that. Around 30,000 people gathered on that hot January day to watch its stately and ridiculous progress into safe waters.
