The Celestial Bells by Transe Express (2002)

Drawing more than 55,000 people to the Sydney Opera House forecourt over five nights, Celestial Bells (a signature work of the French company Transe Express) combined the designer’s childhood memories of a carillon with the dizzy-making fun of a carousel ride.

A bewitching orchestra of 17 bell-ringers and aerialists were lifted 55 metres skywards in a magical music art installation – a spinning human chandelier – whose joyously ringing racket could be heard on the other side of the harbour.

Year: 2002
Festival Director: Brett Sheahy
Significance: 55,000 people witnessed this beautiful aerial carousel – but all of Sydney heard it.
