Sydney Festival's longest running event: Sydney Symphony Under the Stars (1983 – present)

From The Domain, to Parramatta Park and now Tumbalong Park, Sydneysiders have been sprawling across the grass for Symphony Under the Stars since the first Symphony in the Park in 1983.

The beloved tradition has rolled world-class live orchestral music, picnicking en-masse and a dazzling fireworks finale into one delicious summer hamper for decades. Evolving with the times and the population, Sydney Symphony Under the Stars has featured everything from the canonfire of Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture, to the haunting drone of William Barton's yidaki (didgeridoo).

Picnickers from all corners of Sydney turn up year after year to see world-class musicians completely free of charge, rain or shine. And there sure have been some soggy ones.
