Grace Jones at Festival First Night (2009)

Arriving in the spotlight just seven minutes behind schedule – punctual by her standards – Grace Jones electrified an already hyped opening-night crowd in the Domain with a gloriously unrestrained display of theatrical pop spectacle.

Switching between Philip Treacy headpieces – including a bowler hat shooting laser beams – she stalked the stage in vertiginous heels and a skin-tight black corset, tearing into classics such as Nightclubbing, Slave to the Rhythm and Pull Up to the Bumper.

That last number caused a stir among security when Jones began hauling audience members onstage to dance. Could there be a more intimidating offer?
